Seven Sisters of Sleep - Seven Sisters of Sleep EP (2011)

Band: Seven Sisters of Sleep
Country: California, United States
Style: Metalcore/Hardcore
Label: A389

Going off of nothing but the cover art for this release, I decided to give this a shot. I found this on a pretty underground hardcore site and they highly recommended it so why not check this out. After the introductory feedback, I can see why hardcore fans would like this band, as it certainly has trademarks of the genre as well as some more metal influenced stuff on here as well. Make no mistake about the term metalcore on this record, it's not breakdowns and hardcore dancing, this is more like hardcore being mixed with sludge and doom metal.
The sound on this record might actually surprise a lot of people, it did surprise me, with how different it sounds compared to more hardcore hardcore bands. The sludge and doom elements definitely shine through on here, as the music is, for the most part, pretty mid-paced all the way through, rarely speeding up; and the bass on here is just loud and distorted, it can be heard throughout the entire disc, hear the intro to Tide Is Rising for a clear example. The sound on here is very crusty, production values anyway, giving it a very raw and authentic feel to it. The thing that surprised me the most about this band was their integration of more bluesy sounding riffs into their songs, hear tracks like Passed Out Standing or Christmas Morning.
Overall, this is a solid release that is definitely stands out among other hardcore/sludgecore releases I've heard. These guys definitely have a lot of potential and is worth keeping an eye on. If you like more mid-paced, sludgy hardcore, definitely check these guys out.
Overall Score: 7.5
Highlights: Passed Out Standing, CCEC, Beirut

  2. Actually the style is metalcore, granted it's not modern metalcore, but it's more in line with stuff like Converge and Coalesce than Killswitch Engage or As I Lay Dying.
